We all know the saying, sik teng mm sik gong.
Understanding Cantonese was never the problem,
you just can’t always say it back, or you answer in
English out of habit. bolo helps you close that gap,
learning the words people actually use, not
“hello, my name is” stuff.
Free for the first 50 people on the list. We promise
we won’t spam, just updates as we build! We want to
help you sik teng and sik gong :)
Useful phrases you’ll
actually use.

A simple loop built around comprehensible input — the research-backed way heritage speakers actually pick the language back up.
Open bolo and pick up right where you left off — your streak, your current lesson, and lessons built around real conversations, not textbook chapters.
Real native Cantonese videos — family dinners, cha chaan teng orders, everyday life. Tap any word mid-video for pronunciation, meaning, and an example, right where you see it.
Every word you tap gets saved automatically into your own vocabulary — organized and searchable, built entirely from things you actually heard, not a textbook list.
Ask bolo when you’re stuck — grammar, translations, or “does this sound natural?” — and practice actually saying it, not just recognizing it.
Spaced repetition brings saved words back right before you’d forget them, so they move from “I’ve seen that” to “I know that” for good.
bolo isn’t another vocabulary list or beginner course. Learn from the Cantonese you actually hear, save what you don’t know, ask when you’re stuck, and build your speaking confidence a little at a time.
bolo actually started from something pretty personal.
I grew up hearing Cantonese all the time. At home, with family, at dinner, I understood way more than I could actually say. My grandmother would speak to me in Cantonese, I’d know exactly what she meant, and then I’d blank and end up just nodding, not being able to articulate what I actually wanted to say to her.
For a long time, that was just normal to me.
But as I got older, I started caring more about being able to speak it back and not just understand. I wanted to have real conversations with my family without switching to English every time I got stuck. I wanted Cantonese to feel like something I could actually use, not just something I grew up around.
The problem was, most resources didn’t really feel made for people like me. I wasn’t starting from zero, but I also wasn’t confident. I knew the language in this weird, incomplete way — by sound, by context, by family — but I was missing the words to express myself.
So a friend and I started building bolo.
We wanted to make the kind of app we wished we had: something that feels familiar, practical, and actually useful. Real Cantonese. The way people speak at home, with friends, at yum cha. Something that helps fill in the gaps without making you feel like you have to start all over again.
bolo is for people who already have Cantonese somewhere in them and just want help bringing it back out.
bolo is being built by two heritage speakers who ran into this exact problem. Join the waitlist and be one of the first to try it.
